In Brewaniase, in the Nkwanta South District, rice farming has become a source of jobs, income, and stability for local households. The Nkabom Rice Farmers Group, formed in 2019, reflects its name in practice—“Nkabom,” meaning togetherness or unity—as members work collectively to improve their livelihoods and strengthen social cohesion within the community.

The group is made up of 30 members; 22 men and 8 women, who came together with a shared purpose. By pooling labour, resources, and decision-making, the group has built trust and cooperation, which are essential in communities where economic pressures can create tension.

With support under the SOCO Project’s Local Economic Development (LED) component, the group was able to purchase all the necessary farm inputs for their rice farm for the first time. This marked a major turning point. Proper planning and timely use of inputs allowed the group to farm more efficiently and expand production.

During the most recent farming season, the group cultivated four acres of rice and harvested 21.5 bags, the highest yield recorded since the group was formed. The improved output has increased incomes, supported household food security, and created additional work during land preparation, harvesting, and post-harvest activities.

According to Kassim Boafo, Chairman of the group, the results have strengthened both confidence and unity among members.
“Working together has helped us achieve more than we could as individuals. This season showed us what unity and proper support can do,” he said.
Looking ahead, the group plans to expand cultivation to between ten and fifteen acres in the next season. This growth is expected to create more economic opportunities while deepening cooperation among members.

The experience of the Nkabom Rice Farmers Group shows how community-driven agriculture can support job creation, inclusion, and social cohesion, while building resilience in vulnerable communities. By strengthening livelihoods through collective action, the group is contributing to stability and long-term development in Brewaniase.
